Black Cherry wood is not black. The cherries are.  It is a native tree of America that was taken back to England in the early 1600's. I'm not a tree expert, I read all this, but its quite interesting. (My expertise is in spelling and grammer, as you can see as you ponder my website). Anyway, cherry is tightly grained and is truly a joy to turn.
