Osage Orange Bowl, Bodark Bowl, Horse Apple Bowl, Hedge Apple Bowl.  What is it? Osage orange is the known name because no-one wanted to learn (Maclura pomifera  (Raf.) Schneid.) Bodark comes from the french "bois d' arc" meaning bow wood which came from the native americans. These trees were planted in rows and used for fences before barbed wire came along. Livestock would consume the friut and I suppose still do.  The heart wood and roots produces a yellow dye once used for garments.
