Cottonwood is one of the largest eastern native hardwoods even though it has a shorter life than others (trees).  That stated, it makes sense it is one of the fastest growing trees averaging  5 feet per year.  To date (today) I have only turned burl cottonwood which did fairly well.  Tools need to be sharp or it gets a little fuzzy.
